Today, the Wall Street Journal published an article which details how colleges contact parents of students who are caught drinking underage.
The article discusses a few interesting points – such as – (1) Is it appropriate for a university to notify a parent if the student is over 18? Does this create a partnership or adversarial relationship with the parent? What is the purpose of notifying the parent especially if it is a one-time occurrence? (2) Is alcohol abuse really a health issue? If it were deemed a “health issue,” then the university would not be allowed to notify a parent under HIPAA.
Do you think colleges should notify parents about student’s underage drinking?
